Channel 101, shutting down?

This makes it sound like October could be the last live screening of the LA franchise unless they get a shit-ton of submissions. Some heated things said back in April and May. It kicked off a thread at 102, in which they wondered what becomes of them if 101 closes its doors. This makes me a sad panda, but it also makes me wonder why RAMP or its extensive network of underground indie media darlings haven't submitted anything (to my knowledge). Is it because you're short one guy who could hold something off-camera? Because I could be that guy.

It was here in the RAMP forums that I was introduced to Ch 101 with a link to an episode of Most Extraordinary Space Investigations.

Honestly, I think the prime reason we never did a Chanel* pilot is simply one of timing.

If we had known about 101 before we started "Cerealized" we probably would have considered doing something like that before we started another two-year series... and that actually would have probably been a good idea as the wall we hit with "Cerealized" is that we completely burnt out (twice) with the pace of keeping a weekly show up. Doing something monthly for a little while would have been an interesting break.

But we started Cerealized, and by the time the first season of that was done we had a significant amount of material for a second "Cerealized" season that we thought we could do a much better job with (and IMHO we did) and by the time "Cerealized" finally wrapped up we were just burnt out and the idea of working on completely different one-off short comedy pieces for a year was really appealing (and frankly, gave our egos some needed stroking as we've gotten more newspaper, television, and other misc press coverage (as well as two Canadian comedy award nominations, and a Golden Fez) from our comedy shorts than either DED or "Cerealized"). At the end of the day to do what we do (outside of day jobs) is really, *really*, tiring... and there's only so much you can get done in a month.

The second issue about the channels which comes up to anyone who frequents their forums is the argument that they become (or are perceived as) being somewhat "old boys" networks of friends and acquaintances (given the local voting, there's probably some truth to that, although less than those complaining suspect - it's a fact that all the major 101 pilots of note are from the LA area). Regardless of any real (or imagined) bias - when a structure like 101 is built around voting at a big-ass public screening I'd at least want to be at that screening... and it would be extremely frustrating to not be able to be there, and not see how the piece actually played to the public who are voting on it.

The third issue with the channels is that they all start to develop a very distinct comedy voice that (depending on the time, and the voice) just doesn't interest us. 101 went through a real period where anything with a guest star (any guest star) trumped stuff that was actually original... then went through an absurdest phase, an animated phase, a "high quality special effects" phase, a "low quality special effects" phase. Like television if you actually want to get renewed you either have to track and imitate trends, or hope you get lucky... and neither of those is actually how we tend to work. That's not to say that phenomenal works didn't meet these criteria (or, more often than not, start them) - I'm just saying.

And finally, we actually are working on a number of RAMP projects which don't see the light of day on the website - including a long-rumoured feature film project. As much as love 101, I *really* love what we're working on with that, and I'd rather put my efforts into trying to make that a reality in the near future than add to channel that, until recently, was doing just fine on it's own.
